Many of my best lessons were received in the wrestling room. Practice. More Practice. Hard work. Sacrifice. Discipline. Determination. As a young teenager, I was fortunate to train under coach Smith at Matcats club wrestling. Practice was ALWAYS Productive. It was Never easy. The atmosphere was Focused Intense and very competitive. It's no surprise the Winning Results. DO THE WORK!!!
Practice was tough. No excuses. No bullshit. No chit chat. No pussification. When practice was over, I always stuck around for more training. DO MORE! Usually the case, Champion training partner Lee Pritts would beat the shit out of me for the remainder of the time. He was much lighter than me, but it didn't matter. He was well trained and Determined! PREPARATION
Thank you coach Smith for making us Tough as nails. And Thank you brother Lee. Forever Matcats! Bad Boys of Broward.
You are who You Train with. Run with Champions!

Another chapter in American Top Team of the past. The pic taken just a couple days before Monson main event fight in PRIDE 34. The training session was tough as always but truly memorable on that day. During this time, my TERROR-LOCK masterpiece move had already taken off the runway, proven efficient and extremely dangerous. Jeff and I had a battle like always, but it was me who captured the angle. I locked em IN! No escape.
For those who don't know Monson, he's an elite competitor with a grind to win skill set. But his gameness almost got him in real trouble that day. When I achieved the angle and was in on the TERROR-LOCK he didn't want to tap. Rhadi was on the outside calling for me to stop, but I decided to disregard and push for the submission. Jeff was in real danger of a broken leg. He was set for the main event just days away. Ultimately he screamed, verbally submit. Afterwards Rhadi said to me "Why did you do that?"
Really, it was nothing personal. I just wanted the WIN. Afterall I worked hard to score the angle. He's a Great champion and a big boy, should Show Respect and tap. Game is Game. He almost got hurt real bad, but didn't because he wised up in the final moment. He's a smart guy. For You reading this now, Be Smart! I got the angle because I put in the work. Practice. More Practice. Discipline. Sacrifice. No excuses. No F%CKIN bullshit! DO THE WORK!!! No shortcuts. Show up to practice early and leave late. Do More.
Days later, Jeff won the fight! The final fight of PRIDE 34. Unforgettable! Glory days.

Minotauro is one of the greatest champions of all-time because he always DID THE WORK!!!
Rodrigo moved to south Florida to visit family and learn english, after winning double gold in the brown belt division at the 1999 Pan-American Jiu-Jitsu championships held in Miami FL. He was promoted to Black Belt just after the tournament. I was a purple belt. I met him and we started training a lot. Never a dull moment, always very Productive with the training. We'd start around 5Pm and usually finish around 3Am in hialeah, minor breaks and one trip to Conan's academy for a class inbetween. PREPARATION No excuses. Repetition. Drill Drill Drill. Practice. More Practice. Sacrifice. Discipline.
From there it was to Rio de janeiro with big brother Minotauro. Progressive. GO FOR IT!!!

Bustamante academy is where I'd train a couple days a week in 1999 /00. Most of my time was spent training at the Clube Carlson Gracie 11-2PM and with Ricardo de la Riva from 4-9PM in Copacabana. The couple days that Murilo didn't go to the Carlson Gracie academy, I went to his. Saturday was one of those days. The training was very technical. The training space was quite small and with a pillar in the middle to only complicate more, but it really didn't matter. The training was No Bullshit. Technical lessons followed by epic training sessions. Practice. More Practice. Memorable times. *Brazilian Top Team was formed shortly after in the year 2000.

Because he got after it! He took Action always pushing for progress with The Tools and The Formula for WINNING. Practice. More Practice. Sacrifice. Discipline. Determination.
SURFER
Taken from my notes on the day: December 3. 2017 there was a late day bloodbath at Ali'i beach park. 14FT Tigershark killed and ate a sea turtle in the take-off zone and not far from shore. The news travelled fast that late day. As a result, one of the absolute best performance waves in the world was completely uncrowded. Normally at least 30-40 people, there were a total of 5 surfers.
Most people were scared and went with what they thought was the safe decision, to not swim or surf at Ali'i beach park that evening. I was actually super-stoked because I knew the waves would be all ours /the few surfers. To this day, one of the funnest sessions. Nobody there! Memorable at sundown lookout over Kaiaka bay to Kaena point.
